Searching

Returning to the San Francisco Bay area, I reveled in my victory. History had changed significantly, though perhaps for only one family. Nonetheless, it felt excellent. I proved that I could indeed change things for the better. It seemed likely to me now that my mission would involve some great alteration with nothing less than national consequences. Surely I was destined for some monumental spiritual rejuvenation that would somehow be revealed to me. Convinced that I wasn’t cut out for typical evangelism, I found myself examining the bizarre world of the late-sixties west-coast counterculture. Where and when would I find that opening, my niche? My search took on an awkward charm, memorialized for me forever in the lyrics from the soon-to-be-popular Grateful Dead song, “Truckin”, regarding a long and strange trip. Indeed it was. And it easily became a sort of mantra for me. I had not been an enthusiastic Jerry Garcia fan growing up, yet now I took in many a Dead concert, realizing that, despite my loneliness, I was living a dream. I was in constant awe of my situation, and perhaps more enamored than was proper.

The Hashbury was still a hip place. To me it was an extant museum, chock-full of sights and sounds I had eulogized when growing up. Actually, I had really been a few years too young, and nearly a continent’s width removed from the Haight to have had fond memories of these whereabouts. It was a new experience for me, with living rock music legends in their prime of life creating the remembrances that would last for generations to come. The Psychedelic Era was a bountiful time! The sights, or should I say visuals, ranged from the sublime to the trite. I never got my fill of girls in miniskirts (including the paisley prints made of paper) and knee boots, but the panhandling of the hippie chicks got far too old. I adored the poster art of the period, and began a collection of not only the common prints, but also some of the original designs. I knew they would fetch a handsome price in the future! Aside from sports, it was easy to grow weary with the television programs. TV commercials and magazine advertisements were still amusing, especially the short-lived marketing efforts for such forgettable merchandise as the Kelvinator designer refrigerators with genuine cowhide covering, complete with spots. Or the Oster combination radio/ hairdryer: “Swing with Hi-Fi while you dry. It’s groovy!”

The sexual revolution was gathering a major head of steam, initially steamrolling every chaste virtue in its path. This area was challenging, for in my mind, it was imperative that I remain true to my wife. Peggy fulfilled me, and my feelings for her remained strong. But what I would’ve given for even a picture of her! If ever I expected to have her back the way I remembered, I would have to persevere. The S revolution introduced new contraceptive measures, such as the IUD, but it also brought out the ugly injustices of a self-indulgent society.
